“As a cooperatively owned store, Buffalo Street Books is dedicated to being a
downtown resource that supports the community’s passion for reading, books and literacy.”
Established in 2011 as Ithaca’s first and only cooperative bookstore, BSB now claims 735 owners, having acquired more than 40 new members in 2017 alone. During last week’s annual members meeting, there was lively discussion among the owners in attendance about how to: grow the store’s membership base such as the creation of youth and young adult membership levels with concomitant book clubs; develop strategies to encourage more shoppers to visit the store; and connect with like-minded people and organizations to promote the store more effectively.
And right now, there is an exciting opportunity for BSB owners to get involved with
the governance of the cooperative by joining the board of directors.
Nominations and self-nominations are currently being accepted for five openings
during the next two weeks. Three current members, having
completed their term commitments are going off the board without renewing and
two non-officer positions are being added to comprise a nine-member board. There
is a time commitment for each board member to fulfill a three-year term, with six
board meetings per year plus the annual owners meeting. They are looking for
participants with financial experience and also people who are “connected” within
the local community who can advocate for the store.
Nominations and self-nominations for board membership should be emailed to
