Join us for a virtual book launch event! Ithaca's very own Sally McConnell-Ginet will be launching and discussing her new book, Words Matter: Meaning and Power, with Anne Adams.
Sally McConnell-Ginet is Professor of Linguistics Emerita, Cornell, and former President of the Linguistic Society of America and of the International Gender and Language Association. At Cornell, she chaired Modern Language and Linguistics, served as Director of Women’s Studies (now Feminist Gender & Sexuality Studies), and was co-founding director of Cognitive Studies. Her work on the social importance of language began with issues of gender and sexuality but in Words Matter: Language and Power, written for a non-specialist audience, has expanded to include linguistic politics and its connections to matters of social justice more generally.
Anne Adams is professor emerita of Africana Studies and Comparative Literature at Cornell and currently an affiliate faculty member of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (Germany). In addition to having translated works of Afro-German cultural studies, she was consultant to the German publisher of Toni Morrison’s works for several of the novels.
