Buffalo Street Books: Virtual Event Policies

Due to COVID-19, BSB, like all other bookstores, has transitioned to doing virtual author events for the time being. This list of policies reflects the best practices we have learned over the past few months.

If you, the author, are requesting an event, we adhere to the following policies:

At BSB, we welcome event proposals! We especially love hosting events for local authors and partnering with organizations within the Ithaca community to make events happen.

First, we ask that if you are proposing an event with us, please review our mission statement to see if your idea fits well with our store. If so, then fill out the Event Request Form.

We will then look at our calendar and propose a date and time that works for us.

Once an event, date, and time is confirmed, Buffalo Street Books will:

  • Create an event page for your event on our website with the appropriate virtual link

  • Start the virtual event (a BSB staff member will not be required to be present for the entire duration of the event, although you can make arrangements for us to stay on to coordinate audience questions at the end)

  • Create social media graphics to use for your event

  • Promote your event across our social media platforms

PLEASE NOTE: BSB staff can introduce you and facilitate questions from the audience, but we are not responsible for playing the role of interviewer. If you would like an “in conversation” style event, you must be the person to reach out to someone else who will be willing to act in that role.

If we are recruiting you for an event, we adhere to the following policies:

In cases where we request to have an author do an event with us, whether through their publisher or the author directly, the primary difference in how we approach the event is that we are willing to take on helping secure someone to be in conversation with you. Occasionally one of our booksellers may play that role, should you prefer that.

Once an event, date, and time is confirmed, Buffalo Street Books will:

  • Provide someone to be in conversation with you, unless you would prefer to find someone yourself and/or prefer to be the one to reach out to a specific individual

  • Create an event page for your event on our website that will have a crowdcast link; a BSB staff member will be present for the entire duration of the event

  • Start the zoom meeting the day of the event

  • Create social media graphics to use for your event

  • Promote your event across our social media platforms

A Note on Virtual Event Platforms

Buffalo Street Books is able to host virtual events on Crowdcast, Instagram Live, Streamyard, and Zoom. We recommend Zoom for book clubs and events where the author wants to be able to interact with the audience. However, there is some risk of encountering “zoom bombing” or other disturbances on this platform, so we require that you sign our waiver if you choose to do an event on Zoom.

Our Events Coordinator  will work with you to determine which platform is best for your event.
